Dr. Andrew “Andy” Agwunobi is CEO and executive vice president for health affairs at UConn Health and CEO of the UConn Health Community Network. The academic medical center includes a teaching hospital, faculty practice, schools of medicine and dental medicine, graduate programs, research facilities and biotechnology incubator space.
Over the past year, UConn Health received several national recognitions for quality, safety and patient experience, including its 10th consecutive “A” grade in patient safety from Leapfrog and recognition from Forbes as one of Connecticut’s best health care employers. The School of Medicine surpassed $100 million in annual research funding, and clinical demand also continued to grow, with net patient revenue increasing from $371.5 million in 2014 to more than $1 billion.
The organization also acquired Waterbury Hospital through the newly created UConn Health Community Network. Agwunobi said artificial intelligence presents opportunities to improve clinical and administrative operations, while potential Medicaid and federal funding cuts pose ongoing financial challenges.
What qualities are most essential for effective leadership today?
I believe the most important qualities are perseverance, engagement, intellectual curiosity and a strong focus on clear and strategic communication. Equally important are reliability and consistent follow-through, along with the ability to inspire and align a team around a shared vision.
Above all, integrity and empathy are essential, as they build trust, strengthen relationships and create a culture where people feel valued and motivated to do their best work.
What do you value most about living or doing business in Connecticut?
Connecticut’s strength lies in its size and connectivity. As a relatively small state, its leaders from the Governor and state legislature to local municipalities work collaboratively with businesses, higher education and health care institutions to advance shared priorities and drive statewide success. A strong example of this spirit of partnership is the collaboration between UConn Health and Waterbury Hospital, which reflects a broader commitment to sustaining and strengthening access to high-quality care across the region.

Beyond its economic and institutional advantages, Connecticut is also an exceptional place to live and raise a family. It offers strong public schools, vibrant communities and the unique benefit of proximity to major metropolitan centers like Boston and New York, while maintaining a high quality of life.
What is one change that would make Connecticut more competitive economically?
Continuing to strategically position Connecticut as a national leader in next-generation technologies, including quantum computing and artificial intelligence, will be essential to driving innovation, economic growth and long-term competitiveness.
