Zygo Corp.’s development of optical displays used in training helmets worn by American fighter and helicopter pilots has landed the Middlefield manufacturer a $4.7 million contract extension to deliver the same specially equipped helmets to train Australian fighter pilots.
Zygo announced Wednesday a continuation contract from New York defense contractor L-3 Communications’ Link Simulation and Training Division for advanced helmet mount displays (AHMDs).
The deal continues production of helmets from Zygo’s late 2009 multi-million dollar contract to produce helmets for U.S. Air Force F-16 air crew training program, said John Stack, president of Zygo’s Optical Systems Division.
Stack said the U.S. and Australian Air Forces wanted lightweight systems that had high visual acuity and field of view. The Army uses the same Zygo equipment to train helicopter pilots.
