Zero Energy Challenge winners named

The Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund last week named the three winners of its 2009 Zero Energy Challenge, an attempt to inspire builders to create a home that generates all its power, heating and cooling.

First place and $15,000 went to homeowners Mary and George Keithan for their Killingworth home that achieves the lowest Home Energy Rating System rating by using geothermal heating and cooling, solar systems and an energy efficient building.

Second place and $10,000 went to Jeremy and Karann Schaller of New Hartford for their custom-built home; and third place and $5,000 went to Chris Trolle of BPC Green Builders for a New Canaan home.

“Our finalists have shown how technology, design insight and investment now can result in extreme savings for the future,” said Richard W. Steeves, chairman of the Energy Efficiency Board, in a statement.
