Wallingford’s Z-Medica, which makes wound dressings that stop blood loss, said it has acquired a similar product — with several key differences — from Dutch manufacturer Taureon.
The deal adds Novacol to Z-Medica’s product portfolio. Made from collagen fiber and used primarily in surgeries, Novacol is a resorbable hemostat, meaning the body can dissolve and assimilate it. Z-Medica’s wound dressing QuikClot is nonresorbable.
Z-Medica CEO Stephen J. Fanning said the acquisition is “the first step towards expanding the Z-Medica portfolio and providing a wider range of innovative, safe, and effective products to the broader healthcare market.”
Taureon CEO Dick van Kalkeren said Z-Medica’s distribution network will help Novacol compete in the global market. Taureon said it sold the product to strengthen its focus on its other products in Europe.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
