The state treasurer’s office is searching for the 34,767 newest owners of as much as $401 million in unclaimed funds awaiting them in state coffers.

Tomorrow, Treasurer Denise Nappier will publish in major state newspapers a 104-page insert — called the CT Big List — listing current or former residents and businesses who have, among other things, dormant balances in savings and checking accounts, uncashed checks for insurance benefits, commissions or wages.

This year, the list of individuals and businesses with dormant assets has grown to 887,000, Nappier said.

“The treasury is one of the few agencies in government with an express mission to give money back,” she said. “We have millions of dollars waiting to be returned to rightful owners.

Copies of the insert have also been provided to town halls and public libraries throughout Connecticut. In addition, the Treasury has an interactive web site, www.CTBigList.com.

Since her election in 1999, Nappier said her office has returned more than $185 million to approximately 146,000 individuals and businesses. In fiscal 2009, which ended June 30, the treasurer returned a record $32.3 million to nearly 15,000 claimants, she said.
