YNHH to break ground on $838M neuroscience center

Yale New Haven Hospital plans to break ground this week on its new $838 million neurosciences center at its Saint Raphael campus, two years after delaying the project because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Officials from the hospital, state and city of New Haven are expected to be in attendance for a ceremony Wednesday morning to mark the official launch of construction, according to hospital spokesman Mark D’Antonio.

The new center will be 505,000 square feet and include two new patient towers. One is the Sherman tower by Sherman Avenue and the other will be the McGivney tower, to be built atop the existing McGivney Center. The project includes operating rooms, procedure rooms, support spaces and 214 inpatient beds.

The center will focus on neuroscience, providing care to patients with ailments such as stroke, spinal disorders, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Plans call for the project to be built within the existing footprint of the St. Raphael hospital campus, which is bordered by Sherman Avenue and George Street.

In April 2020, hospital officials announced they would be delaying the start of construction, which had originally been slated to begin in the spring of 2020, due to the impact of the pandemic.

At the time, hospital officials said they had decided to put major projects on hold, as they needed to focus on caring for patients impacted by COVID-19. The Yale health system, which includes Yale New Haven Hospital, has provided care for thousands of patients with the disease since the pandemic began.

As of Aug. 25, Gov. Ned Lamont’s office reported 11,195 deaths associated with the disease in Connecticut to date.
