Yankee Gas’s proposal to raise natural gas rates by 7.3 percent in 2011 and by 2.8 percent in 2012 earned the ire of outgoing Attorney General Richard Blumental, who has vowed to oppose the efforts.
Yankee Gas, a Northeast Utilities company and the largest supplier of natural gas in Connecticut, announced its intentions last week to make the proposed rate request with the Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control next month.
Blumenthal, who will join the U.S. Senate in January, called the increase poor timing during the recession and said the company’s return on equity should reflect a time when other Connecticut businesses are hurting to break even.
“Yankee Gas is already earning reasonable revenues,” Blumenthal said in a statement.
