Yale turns on 1MW solar array

Yale University said it has turned on a one-megawatt rooftop solar array at its West Campus.

National installer and leasing operator SolarCity installed the 4,400-plus panels on a warehouse roof and is selling the power generated to the school, under a 20-year lease. The array will generate enough electricity to power 130 Connecticut homes for a year and offset the equivalent of more than 16,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide over the system’s life, Yale said.

The system increases Yale’s renewable energy generation eight fold.

The school said the array fits into its sustainability plan announced last year, which includes investment in greenhouse gas reduction, study of a school-based system of carbon pricing, and other initiatives.
