Yale stays Elm City’s top employer, taxpayer

Yale University has released figures showing it is New Haven’s top employer and biggest taxpayer, The Associated Press reports.

The New Haven Register reports city aldermen were briefed on the figures Monday night by Bruce Alexander, the schools’ vice president for New Haven and state affairs and campus development.

Alexander put Yale’s city tax bill at $4 million a year in addition to the $30 million the city receives from the state in lieu of taxes on exempt property. He says Yale also has paid $25 million in city permit fees over the past three years.

Alexander says 4,000 of Yale’s 12,000 employees are city residents, and pointed out that the school requires that 20 percent of its construction jobs be given to New Haven residents.
