Yale-New Haven and Bridgeport hospitals have received approval from state regulators to consolidate their separate pediatric services into a single program, a state filing shows.
As part of the consolidation, which was approved by the state’s Office of Health Care Access, Bridgeport Hospital will transfer ownership of its 42 inpatient pediatric beds and its outpatient clinics to Yale-New Haven Hospital.
But the pediatric services would be maintained at Bridgeport Hospital’s P.T. Barnum Pediatric Center, the regulatory filing said.
Both hospitals belong to the Yale-New Haven System, and officials said the consolidation represents a logical evolution of the organization with “the foremost goal to improve clinical quality and patient safety in an efficient and effective manner.”
The addition of 42 beds would put Yale’s bed count at 1,008, while Bridgeport Hospital’s bed count would fall to 383.
