Yale University is mourning the loss of its longtime chief investment officer, David Swensen, who died Wednesday after battling cancer.
In announcing Swensen’s passing, Yale President Peter Salovey described him as an “exceptional colleague, a dear friend, and a beloved mentor to many in our community.”
Swensen earned his Ph.D. at Yale in 1980, then worked for financial institutions including Salomon Brothers and Lehman Brothers. He returned to Yale five years later to lead its investments office.
“With his guidance, Yale’s endowment yielded returns that established him as a legend among institutional investors,” Salovey said.
The university’s endowment grew exponentially during Swensen’s tenure, and now has some $31 billion in assets, according to Yale.
Swensen was also a lecturer at Yale who shared his knowledge of investment strategy with his students, many of whom have gone on to become leaders in the field.
“His approach, which has become known as the ‘Yale Model,’ is now the standard for many university and foundation endowments,” Salovey said.
