Yale University has launched a three-year, $4.5 million fund for local nonprofit groups.
The Yale and New Haven Community Fund says it is seeking applications for projects that will “create lasting value for New Haven and its residents.”
Grant awards could be up to $500,000 per project. Of the $4.5 million fund’s total amount, $1.5 million will be available each year.
“The fundamental belief behind this fund is that many of the solutions to many of our challenges are already right here in New Haven,” Yale President Maurie McInnis said at the program’s launch.
The university says a five-person reviewing committee of Yale and community representatives will select the award recipients. The application process will remain open through the end of August and awards will be announced by the end of the year.
The selection process will prioritize several areas, including arts and culture, community vitality and neighborhood strength, economic opportunity and workforce development, education and youth development, and health and wellness.
The university has faced persistent criticism that it does not invest enough in its host city.
In March, after months of negotiation with New Haven, Yale announced an updated “town-gown” agreement. Under the deal, Yale will pay New Haven $29.9 million in the next fiscal year, with contributions to $33.6 million by 2033.
Previously Yale paid the city around $23 or $24 million annually.
Since becoming president in 2024, McInnis has said that continued investment in the New Haven community remains a priority.
