WSJ report: Sikorsky-Lockheed deal could be close

United Technologies could announce an $8-billion-plus sale of its Sikorsky helicopter unit to Lockheed Martin as early as this week, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday night.

Citing unnamed sources, WSJ said UTC and Lockheed were in advanced talks.

A Reuters report last week said Lockheed and Rhode Island’s Textron were considered finalists in the courting of the helicopter maker.

UTC last month concluded that it would sell or spin off Sikorsky, which is not as profitable as its other divisions.

That announcement came several weeks after Sikorsky announced 1,400 layoffs, including 180 in Connecticut, and the closure of its Bridgeport facility.
