WSJ: CT CEO among highest paid in U.S. in 2023

The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday named the CEO of Stamford-based Charter Communications as the fourth-highest paid CEO among companies in the S&P 500 index.

Christopher Winfrey received total pay of $89.08 million in 2023, an increase of 470% from 2022, according to the report. 

His compensation largely consisted of options and stock vesting over five years – much of it only if the company’s shares rise 28% to 152% from when the grants were made, according to the WSJ.

Of his total pay, $5.2 million was in the form of cash.

Winfrey joined the cable operator, which owns Time Warner Cable, in 2010 as the chief financial officer. He was appointed CEO in December 2022.

Charter Communications reported $54.6 billion in revenue in 2023 and profits of $4.5 billion.

Connecticut’s second-highest paid CEO was Glenn Fogel of Norwalk-based Booking Holdings, a travel technology company which owns Booking.com and Kayak.com.

Fogel received total pay of $46.72 million in 2023, including $5.75 million in cash – up 51.8% from the prior year. He ranked No. 10 nationally.

The highest paid CEO in 2023 was Hock Tan, of Broadcom, who received a total of $161.83 million, according to the report. Broadcom, headquartered in San Jose, California, is a global technology company that designs, develops and supplies a broad range of semiconductors.
