WSJ: Charter Communications to cut 1,200 jobs, including at Stamford HQ

Stamford-based cable company Charter Communications Inc. plans to eliminate about 1,200 positions as it works through its mega-merger with Cox Communications, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The layoffs, representing just over 1% of its roughly 95,000 employees, will affect corporate and back-office roles at Charter’s Stamford headquarters and other U.S. offices, the Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. Front-line sales and customer-service jobs will not be impacted.

The restructuring is aimed at streamlining operations as the company adjusts to a changing media landscape, according to the Journal.

The job cuts come amid Charter’s plans to merge with Atlanta-based Cox Communications in a $21.9 billion deal expected to close in mid-2026, pending regulatory approval. Once finalized, the combined company will operate under the Cox Communications name and be headquartered in Stamford, creating what would become the largest cable and broadband provider in the U.S.

The job cuts also come as the broader cable industry faces significant headwinds from changing consumer habits, particularly cord-cutting.
