W.R. Berkley swings to 3Q loss

Greenwich-based insurer W. R. Berkley Corp. suffered a third-quarter net loss of $28 million, or 17 cents a share, due to hurricane-related losses and investment losses.

The loss was within the loss estimate of 15 cents to 20 cents a share that W.R. Berkley announced on Oct. 20.

The loss compares with third-quarter 2007 net income of $180 million, or 93 cents a share.

Without the investment losses, the company said its operating income was $123 million, or 73 cents a share.
