Workers at four Connecticut nursing homes, including one in Hartford, have gone on strike after contract negotiations broke down, The Associated Press reports.
The Service Employees International Union says 400 of its workers, including nurses and nursing assistants, walked off the job Thursday morning at four homes owned by Vernon-based Spectrum Healthcare in Hartford, Derby, Ansonia and Winsted.
Union leaders say the workers’ contracts expired more than a year ago and Spectrum officials haven’t budged on key issues. They say workers will be on the picket lines every day until a deal is reached.
Spectrum Chief Financial Officer Sean Murphy says replacement workers have been brought in. He says the company has offered employees a fair contract with wage increases, free health insurance and paid pensions.
