Nightjar, a women-owned and operated cannabis company, opens the doors of its second Connecticut location in Hamden Friday, becoming the town’s first medical and adult-use dispensary.
The opening coincides with 4/20 weekend, traditionally a celebration of cannabis culture. The store says it will host in-store activities, promotions and discounts through Monday, April 20.
Nightjar opened its East Lyme location last year. It also operates a dispensary in New Jersey.
The Dixwell Avenue dispensary was developed by Soulstar Holdings in partnership with Hamden native Joe Natale.
Soulstar also plans to open a cannabis cultivation facility at the same location in 2027. The facility will repurpose the former Himmel Brothers Co. factory, a long-vacant industrial site dating to 1909, with an Art Deco building constructed in 1937.
Its backers say the project could become the only women-owned and operated cannabis cultivation facility in Connecticut.
“This project is about thoughtful development on Dixwell Avenue,” Natale said. “We are revitalizing an unused space, creating jobs and building something designed to serve Hamden long term.”
Town officials have expressed support for the project.
“Nightjar activates an underutilized space, creates jobs and brings a regulated, compliant operation to the important Dixwell Avenue corridor,” said Eugene Livshits, Hamden town planner.
