Hartford is seeing a new surge in demand for tech workers, with its job listing growth rates now rivaling and in some cases surpassing established technology hubs.
According to a study from Dice, a branch of software products provider DHI Group, tech-related job postings in Hartford grew by 31% between the first and second quarter of 2021, behind locales such as Las Vegas (43%) and Sacramento (36%) but ahead of Miami (30%), Colorado Springs (27%), Phoenix (26%) and Austin (25%).
Those figures do not indicate that the Hartford area has more tech jobs than much larger cities, only that it’s number of open positions grew by a greater margin relative to what it had been in the first three months of the year.
While the study did not say what factors may be powering growth in Connecticut’s capital city, financial technology and insurance technology companies have been opening offices in the region for some time due to the high concentration of potential clients and partners, such as Cigna, Travelers and Aetna, which is owned by CVS.
Hartford did not register on Dice’s listing of tech job posting volume. That metric shows that New York City has the greatest demand for tech workers, followed by Atlanta, Chicago and San Francisco.
“We are in one of the hottest tech job markets since the dot-com era, as evidenced by the upward trend in tech job postings since November 2020,” said Dice CEO Art Zeile. “When pairing the increases in tech hiring with the steadfastly low tech unemployment rate of 2.2%, it remains clear that technologists are in incredibly high demand across multiple sectors including tech, defense, healthcare and finance.”
