Wireless operator starts CT service

Pocket Wireless, which has regional headquarters in Bloomfield, launched its Hartford-New Haven communications service today as part of an $80 million expansion into the Northeast.

Pocket provides flat rate, unlimited use wireless voice and data services.

“We are extremely excited about our roll-out into the Greater Hartford, Springfield and New Haven markets,” said Paul Posner, owner and CEO of Texas-based Pocket Communications, the parent company.

The company said its Springfield service, including the Pittsfield, Mass., and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., areas, will begin shortly after Feb. 5. Combined with Hartford-New Haven, those markets have a combined population of about 3.5 million, Posner said.

In addition, an estimated 60 retail locations are opening with the launch, with an estimated total of 80 employing about 400 workers by the end of the first quarter, Pocket Wireless said.

The company said it recently closed on $100 million in equity funding for the Northeast Pocket Wireless network. The financing will be used to fund Pocket’s network construction and working capital as it builds out and launches services in the market.
