The Winsted regional school system is getting its electricity for the next 20 years via solar panels erected on school-building rooftops.
Regional School District No. 7 contracted with MP2 Capital of San Francisco, which will erect, own and operate the 445-kilowatt photovoltaic arrays.
The system went active on Monday.
Though terms weren’t disclosed, the district will save about $26,000 on about 492,000 kilowatt hours of power the deal’s first year, authorities said.
The installations atop the Northwestern High School and Middle School will also serve as a teaching tool for students about renewable energy sources, officials said.
A $1.34 million grant from the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund helped finance the project.
