Winsted factory closing after 170 years

A Connecticut company that has been in business in Winsted for 170 years is shutting down.

An executive at the Homer D. Bronson Co., which makes metal parts for the automotive industry, says the plant will close, sell its assets and lay off its staff of about 36 employees.

The company is closing because its parent company, Modern Metal Products Co. of Rockford, Ill., has filed for bankruptcy and is selling its assets to pay creditors.

Bronson vice president John Zoldy says no closing date has been set for his company because it’s working to complete its remaining orders.

Zoldy says employees were told of the shutdown plans this week.

The company’s Web site says it was founded in 1839. (AP)
