Windsor manufacturer growing, but not here

A Windsor-based heating and air conditioning manufacturer will add 73 jobs and make a $6.5 million investment over the next three years, but it won’t be in Connecticut.

Turbotec Products Inc., an international supplier of heat exchangers and heat transfer products, will move the bulk of its manufacturing operations from Connecticut to Hickory, North Carolina.

It’s not clear how many jobs will be lost in Connecticut as a result of the decision, but the move represents another blow to Connecticut’s manufacturing industry.

North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue announced the move Friday and said the state offered Turbotec a $76,500 aid package. She also touted the state’s business friendly climate as a factor in recruiting the company.

Turbotec, which has clients around the world in the space conditioning, refrigeration, automotive, biomedical, plumbing, water heating and aerospace industries, has a manufacturing plant in Windsor and a facility in Hickory, North Carolina that employs 16 workers. The company plans to relocate to a larger facility in Hickory.

The annual average wage for the new jobs will be $37,403, not including benefits.

Turbotec Chief Financial Officer Robert Lieberman did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment this morning.

But, in a written statement, Turbotec President Sunil Raina said the company sees “the availability of a trained manufacturing workforce in [North Carolina] as a major plus for the company in the coming years.”

“With this move, we will be better able to serve our expanding customer base, especially in the Southern United States,” Raina wrote.
