Windham golf course to continue operations after sale, says town economic development director

The Mansfield businessman behind the recent purchase of the Windham Club plans to keep it operating as a golf club, according to Windham’s economic development director.

Attempts to reach Timothy DeVivo, the principal of the limited liability company that bought the 116-acre property for $1.1 million in January, have been unsuccessful.

Windham Economic Development Director James Bellano said his discussions with DeVivo and his brother – Windham Mayor Thomas DeVivo – indicate there are no current plans for the property beyond keeping the club running, perhaps with some improvements to the course.

“It will stay as-is for the foreseeable future,” Bellano said Thursday.

The three properties involved in the sale are zoned for manufacturing use and lie within Windham’s Enterprise Zone, which can translate into tax benefits for developers. Bellano said it would be possible to develop a 12-acre parcel from the sale that is not used in the course.

The property had been listed with a starting asking price of $2 million. It  includes a 11,546-square-foot clubhouse and a 4,000-square-foot maintenance building, as well as an 18-hole course.

The DeVivo brothers are well-known area businessmen, having previously run the Willimantic Waste Paper Co. together. That waste management company sold to a Vermont waste management firm in July for an undisclosed sum.
