Wilson-Gray YMCA receives $2,500 gift from PDS Engineering

The Wilson-Gray Youth & Family Center YMCA recently received a $2,500 gift from Bloomfield-based PDS Engineering and Construction Inc. for its Strong Kids Campaign fund. 

The campaign provides funding for financial assistance and program development at 11 YMCAs serving 52 Greater Hartford towns, allowing children, adults and families to access child care, pre-school programs, day and overnight camp experiences, literacy classes, performing arts, model government events, water safety programs and more.

Mutual Housing of Greater Hartford receives TD Charitable Foundation grant

The TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, recently announced the winners of $2.5 million in grants to support affordable housing initiatives through its eighth annual “Housing for Everyone” grant competition. Mutual Housing of Greater Hartford was the Connecticut grant winner, receiving $100,000.

The “Housing for Everyone” competition aims to bolster affordable housing efforts, and invited nonprofits from Maine to Florida to submit proposals outlining their plans and initiatives.

Hebrew Health Care’s Schneiderman honored

Hebrew Health Care’s Physician in Chief Dr. Henry Schneiderman will receive the 2014 Nurse Practitioner Advocate Award for Excellence for Connecticut from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Schneiderman provided written testimony to support proposed legislation in the state legislature that would eliminate the need for advanced practice registered nurses to sign practice agreements with doctors. The legislation aimed to provide APRN’s more freedom to see and treat patients.

As a result of his testimony, Schneiderman was asked to serve on the scope of practice committee of the Connecticut Department of Public Health.

Staples directs $1,000 to CT Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs

 Staples Foundation, the private charitable arm of Staples Inc., has awarded $1,000 to the Connecticut Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs. The grants are part of a philanthropic initiative created by Staples Foundation that allows the company’s employees to direct funding to nonprofit organizations that are focused on education or job skills. The program encourages local community engagement by awarding larger grants to organizations where employees are highly engaged in volunteering or fundraising — up to $25,000 per organization.

People’s United awards $500K to CT organizations

The People’s United Community Foundation, the philanthropic arm of People’s United Bank, awarded $501,000 in grants last year to nonprofits throughout northern Connecticut. In all, 86 nonprofits received funding for programs that supported basic needs services, financial literacy, workforce development and job placement, life skills training, first-time homebuyer programs, affordable housing development, education initiatives and after-school programs.

Recipients included Neighborhood Housing Service of New Britain; Our Piece of the Pie; Eastern Connecticut Workforce Investment Board; and Mutual Housing Association of Greater Hartford.

CT Food Bank launches GROW Up with Good Nutrition program

The Connecticut Food Bank is looking to help low-income families with young children gain access to healthy food and nutrition education through a new GROW Up with Good Nutrition initiative. The initiative is being funded by a three year, $750,000 grant from Stop & Shop’s Our Family Foundation. Connecticut Food Bank’s new “GROW!” Truck, stocked with healthy foods, will travel to early childhood, pre-school daycare and Head Start programs in Connecticut on a regular basis.

Families enrolled in the program attend a brief nutrition education workshop before boarding the truck to “shop” for food. They also receive information on how to prepare foods that are unfamiliar to them.
