Willis Foundation grants $40K to support local autism, housing nonprofits

The Willis Foundation, a nonprofit corporation affiliated with Willis Group Holdings, a global risk advisor, insurance and reinsurance broker with operations in Connecticut, recently announced $40,000 in grants supporting Hartford-area community housing and health services.

 Willis Associates provided a $20,000 check to Sister Patricia McKeon, executive director of Mercy Housing and Shelter Corp., a Hartford nonprofit that aims to eradicate homelessness by providing assistance that meets the basic and longer term needs of individuals and families with the goal of empowering them to re-establish self-sufficiency and housing stability.

Willis Associates provided $20,000 to Autism Services and Resources of Connecticut, a Wallingford nonprofit supporting advocacy, training and family support for the Connecticut autism community.

$1.25M grant for Genetics Research Center and the Institute of Living at Hartford Hospital

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality recently awarded Hartford Hospital’s Genetics Research Center and the Institute of Living a $1.25 million grant to examine the impact of using genetic testing to choose medication for psychiatric inpatients. The Center and Institute are conducting research using genetic testing results to determine whether such tests can improve the treatment of depression.

“This award truly catapults Hartford Hospital to the national stage of personalized medicine in clinical practice,” said Dr. Harold Schwartz, psychiatrist-in-chief, Institute of Living at Hartford Hospital. “This is the first AHRQ grant to be awarded to Hartford Hospital.”

Citizens Bank Foundation grants $10K to Community Economic Development Fund

 The Citizens Bank Foundation recently awarded a $10,000 grant to the Community Economic Development Fund to support its Financial Counseling and Small Business Skills Training Institute. Meriden-based CEDF, which works to strengthen neighborhood economies by providing flexible financial and technical support, established the program in 2008 as part of its efforts to support Connecticut small business growth. The grant is part of Citizens Helping Citizens Strengthen Communities, the bank’s program to contribute to the economic vitality of local communities.

CEDF’s Small Business Training Institute features a series of presentations and workshops addressing a variety of topics including social media, accounting, human resources, borrowing/loans, and customer service. Classes are offered at several locations throughout the state three times per year and are designed to help small businesses owners.

Bank of America awards more than $1.1M to CT nonprofits

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation recently announced $379,000 in grants to Connecticut nonprofits that address critical needs, such as hunger and shelter, and to promote long-term financial wellness. This is in addition to $728,000 in grants announced earlier this year that support housing and workforce development and education programs.
