Plans are in the works to turn a two-story retail building in Westport, at 220-222 Post Road W., into a three-story, mixed-use development with ground-floor retail space and 17 apartments on the second and third floors.
Jennifer Chen, of Darien, doing business as U Park Garden Westport LLC, proposes keeping the 35,577-square-foot building’s ground floor as retail space, while building apartments on the second floor and an added third floor, according to an application filed with the town.
“In recent years, due to declines in the retail/commercial markets, the applicant began exploring options for a mixed-use residential redevelopment, which could help meet the growing need for housing in the Town of Westport while maintaining ground-floor retail,” the application said.
At least three of the 17 units, which will feature private balconies and patios, will be deemed affordable housing.
The building, which Chen bought in 2022 for $4.5 million and sits on a 1.34-acre parcel with 66 parking spaces, was appraised at $5 million and assessed at $3.51 million in 2020, property records show.
