Westhill High School in Stamford is the Connecticut winner of the Keep America Beautiful nationwide recycling competition, the “Recycle Bowl.”
The competition called on all schools to increase their recycling, and Westhill school recycled 3.56 pounds of waste per student, earning a $1,000 prize.
The competition lasted from Oct. 15 to Nov. 9, and included more than 900,000 students from elementary, middle, and high schools in all 50 states. In total, 4.5 million pounds of recyclables were recovered during the competition, at an average of 5.62 pounds per person.
The annual Keep America Beautiful competition was sponsored by Stamford-based Nestlé Waters North America and had a 25 percent increase in participating schools from 2011.
