Wellness center moves to new, bigger Waterbury location

A new medical center offering primary care, behavioral health, and addiction treatment opened for business in Waterbury Monday.

Wheeler’s Waterbury Family Health & Wellness Center, formerly on Jefferson Square, is now at 855 Lakewood Road.

John Sponauer, Wheeler’s vice president of marketing communications, said the new location is larger, which allows Wheeler to offer expanded medical services. It also has room for an on-site pharmacy and laboratory, he said.

The Jefferson Square site, which had been the Waterbury center’s home since it opened last August, is now closed.

Sabrina Trocchi, Wheeler’s president and chief executive officer, said there is a need for “high-quality, integrated health care” in underserved communities such as Waterbury.

“The services offered through our community health center are designed to meet the complex needs of people in this city, many of whom struggle with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, as well as mental health and opioid addiction and other forms of substance use,” Trocchi said in an announcement.

This Lakewood Road center provides both care and treatment in one location, according to Trocchi.

Patients of all ages can obtain medical care, including primary care, chronic disease management, addiction treatment, therapy and psychiatric services. Patients can access services through walk-in care, appointments, or virtually through telehealth and telemedicine platforms.

Medication that can reverse overdoses, Narcan, is available for free to patients and families, made possible in part because of a grant from the American Savings Foundation. The Genoa Healthcare Pharmacy and Quest Diagnostics laboratory services are available on site for patients’ convenience.

Wheeler launched in 1968 to serve mental health needs of children in Plainville, and has since grown to provide a variety of health-related services to residents of all ages throughout the region.
