Webster’s Boston area branch set grows

CORRECTION: An earlier post misstated the number of ex-Citibank offices Webster is taking over.

Connecticut regional giant Webster Bank says it has added three more locations to the number of Boston area branches opening later this month as part of its previously announced expansion inside that region.

The Waterbury lender said Monday the extra sites bring to 17 the number of former Citibank branches for which it has assumed the leases. The added locations are at: 25 Stuart St., in Boston’s “Chinatown”; at 1 Brattle Square (Harvard Square), Cambridge, Mass.; and at 475 Hancock St., in Quincy, Mass.

“These three additional banking centers round out our recently announced Boston expansion, giving us instant critical mass to serve families and businesses in the city and close-in suburbs,” Webster Chairman and CEO James C. Smith said in a statement.

In mid-December, Webster announced it was assuming leases to at least 14 Citibank locations in greater Boston that Citibank planned to vacate early this year in a bid to harvest at least another $1 billion in new deposits in that market.  Webster entered the Boston market with a commercial-banking office at 100 Franklin St. in 2009.
