A downtown New Haven food coop will use a $4 million guaranteed loan from Webster Bank to open a 24,000-square-foot grocery market in the Elm City’s newest high-rise apartment tower.
Wednesday’s announcement came the same day downtown Hartford formally debuted a full-service grocery inside the Hartford 21 apartment tower.
Elm City Market will open this summer with more than 100 workers at the 360 State Street apartments, officials said.
The coop has enrolled more than 450 members since last fall.
The market will feature locally produced natural and organic produce, meats and groceries, authorities said.
Bruce Becker, 360 State’s developer and a coop board member, said 55 percent of the market’s produce will be grown within 400 miles.
The Webster loan carries guarantees from the Connecticut Development Authority and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
