If you’reĀ observing a lot of rich people these days, you’re not just seeing things. The number of households in the U.S. with an annual income of $150,000 or more has increased to 8 million in 2006, up from 5 million in 2002, according to a survey by the Luxury Institute. That population represents about 7 percent of American households. Among the wealthiest households, 6.5 million are white, 572,000 are Asian, 372,000 are Hispanic and 312,000 are African American. Washington D.C. has the highest percentage of wealthy citizens, followed by New Jersey and Connecticut.
