The Connecticut Better Business Bureau offers ways motorists can increase their vehicle’s fuel efficiency, in order to minimize the amount of high-priced gasoline they need to buy.
“Simple changes to driving habits and inexpensive vehicle maintenance have a significant impact on fuel efficiency,” Connecticut BBB Paulette Scarpetti said in a statement.
The tips recommend limiting speeding, braking and rapid acceleration, as they use more gas. Keeping top speeds at 60 mph per hour saves as much as 24 cents per gallon. Hauling around unnecessary items reduces gas mileage by 2 percent for every 100 pounds. Using cruise control increases fuel economy by 14 percent.
Eliminating idling saves about 5 cents for every minute the car is off. Checking tire pressure at the recommended levels can save as much as 31 cents per gallon. Replacing misfiring spark plugs can save 94 cents per gallon. Making sure the car is properly aligned prevents the tires from being inefficiently dragged.
