Waterbury utility contractor says it’s conducting ‘mass layoff’

A Waterbury-based electrical contractor says it is laying off 37 workers after it lost a major contract with Eversource.

Feeney Brothers Excavation LLC in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice to the state Department of Labor said Eversource, one of its largest clients, terminated a contract effective immediately. As a result, the company is performing a “mass layoff” at its Waterbury facility, located at 137 East Aurora St.

No details about the nature of the contract were provided.

The company said it was not able to provide advance notice of the cuts because “the circumstances were not reasonably foreseeable as Feeney Brothers understood Eversource would continue working with it in some capacity.”

The date of the first layoffs was April 15. The rest of the job cuts will be implemented between April 25 and July 31.

Positions that are being eliminated include drivers, foreman, laborers, operators and locators, the company said.
Feeney Brothers is headquartered in Boston and owned by a larger parent company, Atlanta-based Artera Services.
