Waterbury school to seek LEED silver

The design and construction of the new Carrington Elementary School in Waterbury will be built up to the silver standard of the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design program.

The $28 million project will include a special section dedicate to teaching students on the importance of energy consumption and the cost-saving LEED features. The school will have radiant heating in the pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and special education classrooms.

The 82,000-square-foot facility features a media center, technology labs, a 138-bleacher seat gymnasium, locker rooms and administrative offices. The school will open in fall 2013.

KBE Building Corp. of Farmington is the construction manager. Friar Associates of Farmington is the designer.
