Waterbury garment maker shuts down operations

A company that has been making children’s clothing in Waterbury since 1921 is shutting down its plant, leaving up to 40 people without jobs.

Waterbury Garment LLC, located on Thomaston Avenue, has shut down its local operation after its sale to a New York City-based clothing maker, a company executive says.

The company designed, manufactured and distributed children’s sleepwear for large retailers such as Sears and J.C. Penney. It was sold in late October to Charles Komar & Sons Inc., which makes women’s and children’s underwear and lingerie.

An executive says a small group of workers remains at the company’s Waterbury headquarters to tie up loose ends. (AP)
