Walmart is seeking approval to expand its New Haven store by about 8,000 square feet to support growing online grocery pickup operations.
According to application materials submitted to the New Haven City Plan Commission, the addition to the store at 315 Foxon Blvd. would provide storage and preparation space for online grocery orders. The project also includes reconfiguring part of the parking lot, replacing existing spaces in the southwest portion of the site with dedicated pickup parking areas.
The existing Walmart store contains about 164,978 square feet, according to application materials. Following the expansion, the building would total roughly 172,978 square feet. The project would reduce the site's parking count from 847 spaces to 804 spaces while adding dedicated pickup and electric vehicle parking spaces.
The property is located in the BA business zone. Project engineers state the expansion is not expected to significantly affect traffic, drainage or neighboring properties.

The proposal is scheduled for site plan and coastal site plan review before the New Haven City Plan Commission on June 17.
The proposal comes as Walmart continues investing in its Connecticut store network. In April, the retailer announced plans to remodel 10 stores in the state this year as part of a nationwide upgrade program that includes expanded pickup and delivery services.
Walmart said it has invested more than $68 million in Connecticut stores over the past five years.
