Wallingford medical device maker Z-Medica Inc. has signed a deal with Japan’s leading medical electronics maker to distribute exclusively Z-Medica’s wound-dressing line in that Asian country.
Terms of the deal with Nihon-Kohden were not disclosed.
The two companies have worked since 2009 to obtain regulatory approval to distribute the QuikClot product line in Japan’s rigorously regulated medical market.
Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare approved the sale of QuikClot products in March, officials said. The same agency this spring approved the sale of a treatment for a rare blood disorder developed by Alexion Pharmaceuticals in Cheshire.
QuikClot gauze, dressings and bandages are primarily used to rapidly stop bleeding and close wounds on the battlefield. The U.S. military relies on its products.
Nihon’s electronic medical-device lineup includes patient monitors and defribillators.
“We are very pleased that we have signed this distribution agreement with Nihon-Kohden because of their longstanding positive reputation and vast reach throughout the Japanese market,” said Z-Medica CEO Brian Herrman.
