Wallingford manufacturer gets approval for expansion

Rowland Technologies Inc., which manufactures plastic film and sheet products, is planning a large expansion of its Barnes Road facility in Wallingford.

The Planning & Zoning Commission recently approved the company’s site plan to add 33,737 square feet to its existing manufacturing, warehouse and office building, which is now about 70,000 square feet.

The current structure houses administrative offices, a warehouse and manufacturing space.

Tony Mortali, project manager with Rowland, said the new square footage will be used primarily for more office and warehouse space.

“We are excited to stay and expand in Wallingford,” Mortali said. “Business is good and growing, and we are adding personnel, which means we need more office and meeting space.”

The company makes plastic film and sheet products for customers around the world, according to its website. Its products are used in various industries, such as aerospace, apparel, automotive, electronics, health care, packaging, merchandising and signage. The existing facility at 320 Barnes Road is on an eight-acre parcel. In addition to the 70,000-square-foot building, it has 101 parking spaces, according to town documents.

The company is buying neighboring property at 340 Barnes Road, which currently has a single-family residence on it. This house will be demolished to make way for the expansion. Company officials also want to add more parking spaces, documents show.

According to Mortali, while the company has necessary zoning approvals, it still needs to secure required permits. The goal is to begin building the addition by the beginning of summer, with the new construction fully enclosed before cold weather sets in at the end of 2019, he said. Interior work will likely be finished by early next year.

Tim Ryan, economic development specialist for Wallingford, called the company a well-established, long-term local business that has enjoyed past growth.

“It is great to see continued expansion, which shows that business is good,” Ryan said. “We welcome the growth.”
