Wallingford lands W. Hartford factory

West Hartford manufacturer Holo-Krome will move production of socket-head fasteners to a vacant facility in Wallingford in the next 12 months, The New Haven Register reports.

Holo-Krome, currently at 31 Brook St. in West Hartford’s Elmwood section, will move more than 100 workers to 187,000 square feet at 61 Barnes Road, Doreen DeSarro, Wallingford’s business recruiter told the newspaper.

It will take about a year for Holo-Krome to renovate the building and move its workers, DeSarro said.

“This is excellent news, both for the town and for the company,” she said. “It’s an ideal situation for them because the inside of the building has been gutted, which means they can do things the way they want without having to worry about demolition work. And, at the same time, they will have room to grow.”

In addition to the building, which includes 80,000 square feet of warehouse space with 21-foot ceilings, 61 Barnes Road has 51 acres of land. That allows for expansion potential of as much as 150,000 square feet of building space under current zoning regulations, according to specifications from WinStanley Enterprises, the Concord, Mass., company that owns the property.

The building has been largely vacant since it was home to Corometrics Medical Systems, a maker of health care devices. The Corometrics manufacturing operations were shut down in January 2002 after the company was acquired by a division of General Electric of Fairfield.

Since then, DeSarro said, WinStanley Enterprises has provided warehouse space in the building to several temporary tenants.

Holo-Krome is owned by Fastenal, a Minnesota company. Holo-Krome has been in West Hartford since it was founded in 1929.

“We’re looking forward to creating a truly world-class manufacturing site in Wallingford,” said Cory Jansen, Fastenal’s executive vice president of operations.

DeSarro said Holo-Krome officials haven’t talked in specific terms about whether they will eventually expand the Wallingford operations.
