W. Hartford manufacturer seeks 20% energy reduction

West Hartford electrical systems manufacturer Legrand plans to reduce its U.S. energy consumption 20 percent by 2022.

As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings, Better Plants Challenge in 2011, the firm has committed to a 25 percent energy intensity reduction within 10 years. Legrand beat that goal in four year by achieving a 32 percent reduction in four years.

Because the goal was achieved so quickly, the company decided to seek deeper reduction, resulting in Tuesday’s announcement of 25 percent across North American operations, including 20 percent at its U.S. operations, particularly the 100-year-old, 175,000-square-foot facility in West Hartford.

The latest reduction will be based on 2012 levels, meaning the company will strive for the percent decrease based on what it was using two years ago.
