Vote on CT judicial nominees in limbo

A planned vote on Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s nine nominees to the state Superior Court is up in the air amid complaints about the selection process, the qualifications of one nominee and the state budget deficit, The Associated Press reports.

The General Assembly’s Judiciary Committee was scheduled to take up the nominations on Monday but a vote was postponed after a lengthy debate over the qualifications of 39-year-old Laura Flynn Baldini, Rell’s youngest appointee the Superior Court.

The committee moved to other bills, holding up a planned 1 p.m. meeting of the House of Representatives during the final full week of the legislative session.

Members of the Black and Latino Caucus also raised concerns that all Rell’s nominees are white. There’s also debate about whether the judicial branch can afford the new judges.
