Volt will carry longer battery warranty

A person briefed on the plans says General Motors Co. will guarantee the battery in the Chevrolet Volt electric car for a longer period than its conventional car warranties, The Associated Press reports.

Connecticut will be one of the first markets to receive the Volt when it is introduced in the state in 2011.

GM will announce details of the guarantee Wednesday afternoon at its battery pack assembly plant south of Detroit.

The person did not want to be identified because the announcement had not yet been made.

The company currently guarantees conventional car engines and transmissions for five years or 100,000 miles.

The rechargeable Volt is due in showrooms this November. It can travel 40 miles on battery power before a small gas engine takes over to generate power.
