Viridian launches Mass. electric supply business

Norwalk retail electricity supplier Viridian Energy launched its services into Massachusetts on Friday, the seventh state in the 3-year-old company’s history.

Viridian will offer two plans to residential and commercial Massachusetts customers of National Grid and NStar Electric, a subsidiary of Hartford energy giant Northeast Utilities. Viridian first plan offers electricity from sources that are 20 percent more renewable than the local option, and the second plan offers 100 percent renewable electricity.

Viridian has been quietly prepping Massachusetts since February, gaining 900 sales associates in advance of Friday’s launch. Now the company’s services will be available to 90 percent of the state’s 6.6 million residents.

As a competitive electricity supplier, Viridian operates in utility markets where ratepayers have the option to use the default utility generation rate or choose an alternative supplier. The company’s other states are Connecticut, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

In its Massachusetts launch, Viridian partnered with The Waltham Land Trust and Massachusetts Department of Recreation to host a sustainability event in honor of National Trails Day. The event starts at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Massachusetts Central Rail Trail. For information, visit www.viridian.com.
