Village for Families & Children Inc.

Mission: To build a community of strong, healthy families that protect and nurture children.

Background: Founded in 1809 and one of the first agencies in the country to provide homes for neglected children, The Village for Families & Children Inc. (the Village), is a private, nonprofit accredited community service organization serving the city of Hartford and the greater Hartford region. Honoring its 200 years of history in 2009, the Village continues to serve thousands of children and families annually through an integrated continuum of programs that are broad in scope. We accomplish our mission when we help children achieve academic and social success, work to build strong, safe, cohesive communities, and offer the support families need to provide for and nurture their children. The Village specializes in research-based, culturally competent child welfare, children’s behavioral health, and community and family-building services that are based in Hartford’s most challenged neighborhoods, ensuring easy access by those in need. The Villages contributors include the state Department of Children and Families, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, the U.S. Department of Education, the state Department of Education, and corporate, foundation and individual donors.

Major Fundraiser: A three-year Champions For Children Bicentennial Campaign launched in 2009.
