Vernon’s TicketNetwork suing CT BBB

The Vernon operator of an online network that matches entertainment ticket issuers and buyers has filed a civil lawuit alleging the Connecticut Better Business Bureau runs a “pay to play” ratings system that hurts consumers.

TicketNetwork Inc. founder and President Don Vaccaro claims in the suit filed Wednesday in Vernon Superior Court that businesses who pay the Connecticut BBB fees for membership get ratings that are better than nonmembers.

TicketNetwork says it is not a BBB “accredited busienss.”

TicketNetwork’s suit is fresh on the heels of a New Jersey judge’s dismissal last week of that state’s lawsuit against the network that some experts say may expand public access to tickets to concerts and other entertainment events.

The New Jersey judge ruled TicketNetwork is not liable for misleading information about the availability of tickets provided by third-party ticket sellers.

The BBBs in Connecticut and around the country have drawn fire in recent years from consumer advocates who claim the agencies’ “points system” is biased in favor of members.

“The current BBB system gives consumers an unfair shake when it comes to providing an objective view of how businesses perform and how they treat their customers,” Vaccaro said in a statement announcing the suit.

TicketNetwork asks the court to halt the Connecticut BBB’s practices, as well as recovery of its legal costs.
