Vernon’s Rockville Library getting $3.4M refit

An 18-month, $3.4 million expansion of Vernon’s Rockville Public Library building gets under way Sunday, authorities say.

The 6,000-square-foot addition is being partly financed with a $300,000 grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.

The new space will be tacked onto the rear of the 108-year-old building, as well as renovation of 17,600 square feet of existing space, said Donna Enman, library director.

The project will provide enhanced reading areas, space for 10,000 more books and 4,000 new audio books, CDs and DVDs, a 30-seat community meeting room and a dedicated young adult space.

An elevator and accessible restrooms will bring the library into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Additionally, a covered portico and entrance will be built at the rear of the building, and the parking lot will be expanded by 42 spaces.

During construction, staff offices and library programs will be housed in rented space in two buildings adjacent to the library.
