It’s about to become illegal to dispose of old computers, televisions and other electronics in Vermont’s landfills, The Associated Press reports.
But Vermont’s new electronic waste law, set to take effect Jan. 1, also sets up free collection programs for some, but not all, electronics.
Starting July 1, computers, monitors, printers, TVs, and peripherals like mice and keyboards will be eligible for what’s being called free e-cycling.
Officials say the new disposal laws are needed because electronics contain potentially harmful materials such as lead and mercury as well as potentially valuable materials such as copper and gold.
