Verizon contractor to idle 84 in CT stores

Flextronics America LLC, a North Carolina-based company that does contract work for businesses like cellphone companies, plans to lay off 84 Connecticut workers from Verizon Wireless stores by August, The Journal Inquirer reports, citing a state Labor Department filing.

The layoffs do not include Verizon employees, and none of the stores will close, according to the filing, known as a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act, or WARN notice filed with the state labor agency, the paper reported Tuesday on its Web site.

The layoffs will include seven at the 136 Elm St. store in Enfield’s State Line Plaza, and nine in South Windsor, at the 9 Buckland Road store in the Evergreen Run shopping plaza, according to the document, filed by Beverly Mulder, Flextronics’ vice president for human resources.

The remaining job cuts will occur at Verizon Wireless stores in Avon, Brookfield, Danbury, Fairfield, Newington, North Haven, Norwalk, Orange, Stamford, Waterbury, and West Hartford.

“Layoffs may occur in phases, but Flextronics anticipates that all layoffs will be complete by Aug. 31, 2011,” Mulder said in the WARN notice.

“We regret the need to take this action, which is the result of ongoing integration activities and the strategic realignment of capabilities to meet current business requirements,” she said.

Mulder also said all affected workers have been properly notified and will be eligible to receive a “separation payment,” which she did not describe.

Corporate parent Flextronic International is headquartered in California.
