Vacant bowling alley sells in Wallingford

A Wallingford site that was the home of a former bowling alley for decades recently sold for $935,000.

Michael Mauro, general partner with Mauro Associates LP of North Haven, bought the property, a 29,189-square-foot building on just over two acres at 600 South Colony Road.

Mauro is the president of Mauro Motors auto dealerships, which include BMW of North Haven, Mercedes-Benz of North Haven, and the repair shop Town & Country AutoBody, also in North Haven.

The property is the former home of Colony Lanes. It was originally constructed in 1960, when it was built as a bowling alley for AMF Corporation. It continued to be used for bowling for nearly six decades, until 2018.

Steve Miller, principal and broker with Levey, Miller & Maretz in Woodbridge, represented the buyer.

According to Miller, the buyer is “exploring possibilities for the site,” with no plans finalized yet.

Kevin Geenty of The Geenty Group, Realtors in Branford, was the agent for the seller, Porto Realty Inc. of Connecticut.

The seller includes 11 family members, all children and grandchildren of the original Porto family which built the bowling alley, according to Geenty.

“We don’t know what the buyer plans to do with the site, though I have every reason to believe it will be automotive-related,” Geenty said.

Geenty said his agency had the listing for about three weeks before it was on contract. The site had been on the market for nearly a decade, according to Geenty, though it had been listed with a different agency.

Geenty attributed the length of its time on the market to the property being “overpriced” earlier, at nearly $2 million.

“We asked for a little over $1 million and sold for $935,000, and we’re pleased,” Geenty said.
